North Carolina: Winter Weather Update

As a snowstorm brought on ice and snow to the Southeast this weekend, parts of North Carolina including Charlotte were significantly impacted, and a Winter Storm Warning is in effect through Monday afternoon. 

Wet weather is expected overnight into Monday with more snow, sleet and freezing rain keeping road conditions bad across the area. Precaution is being advised by all, especially for commercial motor vehicles during slippery road conditions.

The North Carolina Trucking Association released a winter weather update as well, as snow continued to fall with more snow and sleet expected Monday morning.

The winter weather update includes the following, warning all of hazardous travel and more bad conditions:

Spotty, light precipitation is expected overnight Sunday and will continue into Monday. Areas in the Mountains, Foothills, and NW Piedmont are expected to remain mostly snow, with the potential for some light sleet/freezing rain later this morning. An additional 6-12” of snow is expected in the Northern Mountains and NW Piedmont, 4-8” in the Triad, and 1-4” in the Southern Mountains and Triangle.

 

The threat of ice/freezing rain has increased, largely along the I-85 corridor where up to 0.30” of ice accumulations is possible. Additionally, areas south and west of Asheville have the potential to accumulate 0.30” of ice. All other areas in Central NC and portions of the SW Mountains could accumulate 0.10 – 0.20” of ice through this afternoon. Ice accumulations coupled with gusty winds (25-35 mph) could down trees and power lines leading to numerous, widespread power outages.
